More Resources for a Life in Modern Dance

From Blog Creator/Director Jill Randall:

I am thrilled at the success of this blog since its start in
August 2012. Dancers all over the United States are reading the postings each week,
and several college dance departments are using it as a “living textbook.” We
have two exciting posts coming up this month from dancers Laura Everling
(Diavalo, Cirque du Soleil) and Natalie Desch (Doug Varone).

Once a month, I will post additional information for readers. Today’s post shares three useful, practical, and worthwhile
resources for dancers.

In this internet age, there are many great resources, articles, and research documents available for free on the web. However, I highly advocate for modern dancers to spend a little money each year and join Dance/USA and the National Dance Education Organization.

Dance/USA

Dance/USA is the national service organization for professional dance. I have been a member for 8-10 years now. The organization does many things, and I find most useful the email updates, publications, and yearly meetings. The emails include job postings from around the country – audition notices, college positions, and arts administration jobs. The emails include funding information, articles on dance, and advocacy related issues. Dance/USA does research on dancers and dance audiences. Every publication of theirs I have taken the time read has been very interesting and informative. Their yearly conference brings together artists and administrators from all over the country. Your money will be well spent on a membership – only $30/year for students and $100/year for individuals.

NDEO – National Dance Education Organization

In addition to a Dance/USA membership, I highly encourage students and artists to join NDEO. NDEO is the national service organization for dance education (K-12, college, studios, and community centers). NDEO has created the national standards for K-12 dance as well as preschool dance classes. NDEO hosts a yearly conference. The email lists are the main way to find out about many teaching positions around the U.S. On the email list, you can also pose questions related to your teaching, and many teachers will respond to your query. The Journal of Dance Education is one of the few scholarly journals related to dance. Membership is reasonably priced at $45 for undergraduates and $95 for artists.

Arts Education Partnership

Last, I would like to recommend joining the Arts Education Partnership's email list. I have looked to AEP for over a decade to find current research on arts education and arts engagement. Their emails also contain information on conferences, workshops, jobs, and more.
