Postscript: Further Discussion, Reflection, and Research Related to Helen Simoneau’s Artist Profile

Each week following an artist's post, reflection questions and research ideas will get posted. These are aimed towards college level courses (senior seminar, composition, dance education, and more), but of course anyone can read the postscript and find thought-provoking questions and activities.

Discuss: Inspiration

As a group, talk about 2 details from Helen's profile that struck you and why.

Research: Helen's Movement Style

Spend some time on Youtube viewing several clips of Helen's choreography. How would you describe the movement? Make a list of 10 words. See if you can list the actual actions you see (ie jumping, flipping, kicking, etc) as well as the movement qualities (ie fluid arms, sharp head movement, etc).

Research: ADF (American Dance Festival)

If you are unfamiliar with ADF, research on the web about this historic dance festival (American Dance Festival). What classes do they offer? What levels? Who will be performing there in the summer of 2013? Why attend ADF?

Research: The A.W.A.R.D. Show

Helen earned the honor of winning the A.W.A.R.D. Show in NYC. (Fyi, the first artist profiled here, Katie Faulkner, also won the A.W.A.R.D. Show, in San Francisco). Find out more about it:

Reflect: Yoga and Pilates

As a dancer, yoga and Pilates have been a part of Helen's life in many ways – to earn an income, train, and find a community. Are yoga and Pilates a part of your dance life? How so? Consider these three aspects: income, training, and community.
