Postscript: Further Discussion, Reflection, and Research Related to Jenny Showalter’s Artist Profile

Each week following an artist's post, reflection questions and research ideas will get posted. These are aimed towards college level courses (senior seminar, composition, dance education, and more), but of course anyone can read the postscript and find thought-provoking questions and activities.

Write: Goals

Jenny wrote about her goals for the future, as well as about goals in general. Write for a few minutes about goals in your life, both short-term and long-term. What are three dance goals for the coming year, or coming semester? Where do you envision yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

Consider: Co-Directing

Jenny co-directs a company. Hypothetically speaking, if you were to have a company, studio, or festival, who would you want to be your co-director? Why? What skills do you each bring to the table? What groundwork would need to be laid to ensure a solid partnership and set up for open communication, honesty, and risk taking?

Discuss: Strengths as a Dancer

Though this might feel awkward at first, consider having this discussion with a professor, within a choreography class, or with a close friend. Jenny wrote about what she looks for in a dancer. She wrote about: unique style, risk taking, and "thinking dancers." Try out this activity, either talking honestly about yourself, or about each other in a class, considering each person's unique style, ability to take risks, and what it means to be a "thinking dancer."
