Postscript: Further Discussion, Reflection, and Research Related to Stephanie Sleeper’s Artist Profile

Each week following an artist's post, reflection questions and research ideas will get posted. These are aimed towards college level courses (senior seminar, composition, dance education, and more), but of course anyone can read the postscript and find thought-provoking questions and activities.

Consider: Your Skills as a Dancer

In Stephanie's profile, she described what she looks for in a dancer for her work as:

Presence and a willingness to make personal choices.

Reflect on these two ideas and your own commitment to choreography and projects.

Costume Design

Stephanie has worked in various ways doing costume work. During college, did you get to take a course or two on the subject? An internship? What are your skills with costume sewing and design? What are your interests? If a course is not an option for you, might an internship at the university costume shop be possible? Also, basic sewing classes are often offered at fabric stores, community colleges, and adult school programs.

Dancing in NYC

Are you considering moving to NYC in the near future? What advice from Stephanie's profile would you like to remember? Who are your resources in NYC already?

Final Thoughts – What It Means to Be a Professional Dancer

At the end of her profile, Stephanie talked about our visions of what it means to be a professional dancer. What does it mean to you, to be a professional modern dancer in 2013? What does that look like in terms of paying work, rehearsals, schedules, etc? If possible, discuss in one of your courses.
