Each week following an artist's post, reflection questions and research ideas will get posted. These are aimed towards college level courses (senior seminar, composition, dance education, and more), but of course anyone can read the postscript and find thought-provoking questions and activities.
Research: Salt Lake City Dance Scene
Jill talked about her work over the years in Salt Lake City. Spend 15 minutes researching the companies in the community - Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, Repertory Dance Theater, and SB Dance. Seek out information on the Utah Arts Council website, and look at the city run arts centers (such as the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center).
Define: "Producing" A Dance Concert
For years, Jill has co-produced an annual event called Momentum. If unfamiliar with this term, discuss it within a class. What does producing a dance performance or festival mean – with logistics, finances, marketing, etc?
Reflect: Feedback on Teaching
As Jill wrote about teaching dance, she encouraged us to get feedback on our work. When was the last time you got feedback from a peer, mentor, or employer? It is very easy to go months without feedback. You might need to pro-actively invite someone into your class to observe and talk afterwards. Yes, indeed, this is a vulnerable position to be in but a very valuable one. You can ask a friend, and you can give feedback to each other, to both be in the position of observer and teacher.
