Postscript: Further Discussion, Reflection, and Research Related to Janet Wong’s Artist Profile

Each week following an artist's post, reflection questions and research ideas will get posted. These are aimed towards college level courses (senior seminar, composition, dance education, and more), but of course anyone can read the postscript and find thought-provoking questions and activities.

Research/Discuss: Terms and Titles

1. Repetiteur. Janet describes herself as a Repetiteur. Other artists, such as Shelley Senter (Trisha Brown), also use this term. If unfamiliar with the term, research on the web and then discuss in a class.

2. Discuss how an artistic director, managing director, executive director, education director, and rehearsal director all have different roles within a dance company. Look at the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane site to find out about its organizational structure and compare it to one or more other dance companies (such as Mark Morris, Joe Good Performance Group, Bebe Miller Company, and Kate Weare Company). Which positions personally interest you?

Reflect: "Other Skills"

Janet mentioned her fear of not having other skills outside of performing and dance. Do you have a similar fear? What skills do you currently have or hope to have (ex. becoming a nanny, website designer, business manager, caterer)?

Research: Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company

Spend 10 minutes on the company's website researching their current projects and touring schedule. Will you be able to see a performance this coming year? If not, what are ways via the internet or the company's website to engage with their work this year?

Reflect: Passion

Last, pull out a timer and your journal. Set the timer for 5 minutes and consider Janet's final advice:

"Don't forget your passion. The world does not want or need another dancer. You have to want it badly."
