Postscript: Further Discussion, Reflection, and Research Related to Dana Lawton’s Artist Profile

Each week following an artist's post, reflection questions and research ideas will get posted. These are aimed towards college level courses (senior seminar, composition, dance education, and more), but of course anyone can read the postscript and find thought-provoking questions and activities.

1. DISCUSS:
Dana wrote, "I appreciate the different skill sets necessary for each discipline of dancing and how they innately compliment each other as well." She was talking about wearing multiple hats as a performer, choreographer, teacher, and student. In a class, discuss the skills needed for each of these aspects of dance life.

2. REFLECT:
"Try things that make you uncomfortable." On your own, consider your current dance life (classes, projects, jobs, etc). Where are you being pushed right now? Who or what is pushing you? How are you going to challenge yourself in the near future? Who can support you with your goals – a teacher, mentor, or friend?

3. OBSERVE:
Dana talked about the value of observing others teach, and wearing a different "lens" even when you are taking a class. Be an observer this week. Consider questions such as:
  • What was the format of the class? How much time was spent in the center, across the room, and working on the combination? How many different "parts" (combinations/warm ups) were a part of the class today?
  • Consider how much the teacher demonstrated, or used verbal cues….
  • What "worked?"
  • What would you have done differently?
