Postscript: Further Discussion, Reflection, and Research Related to Wendy Jones’s Artist Profile

Each week following an artist's post, reflection questions and research ideas will get posted. These are aimed towards college level courses (senior seminar, composition, dance education, and more), but of course anyone can read the postscript and find thought-provoking questions and activities.

Discuss: Quote from Wendy's Artist Profile

"The key change in my 30s is that I know that dancing as a performer draws from my principal focus on choreographer and teacher, not the other way around. I’ve found my strengths."

In a course, discuss this quote. What do you draw upon right now? What is the relationship and interrelationship of being a teacher, choreographer, and performer?

Reflect: Teaching High School as a Venue for Your Artistry

Wendy is a well-loved and well-respected Bay Area dance teacher. She brings creativity, craft, and artistry into each of her projects with her students. Reflect on this idea – your teaching as a venue for your artistry.

Research: A Dance Credential

As Wendy discussed, she earned a Physical Education Credential in California in order to teach dance. Some other states in the US have similar programs, while others have Dance Credentials. Research the state you are in, as well as one or two states that you envision possibly working in over the next 5 years. What courses and exams must you complete? Why get a credential? What doors will open for you? Consider future opportunities, job stability, full-time dance work, and serving many young people through a school position. (You might also consider doing some research on the National Dance Education Organization's website.)
