Becoming a Teaching Artist: Go See a Show….A Youth Show

As we head into spring, there will be a handful of children's and teen productions in your area. Whether you are still in college or new to teaching, seeing a children's show is well worth your time.

As a new teacher, one of the hardest things to envision is making work for young people for an audience. How do you find that balance of work that excites your students but also is engaging for the families in the audience? What is age appropriate and developmentally appropriate?

As a young person, seeing a spring production of Children's Dance Theatre in Salt Lake City left a strong impression on me. Seeing that concert many years ago showed me how to use magic and whimsy to create a full production around a theme.

Here in the Bay Area, there are wonderful events through Destiny Arts Center, Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, and ODC Dance Jam, to name a few. The work at Destiny Arts is incredible, and their shows are coming up in a few weeks. Click here to read more.

As for finding out about these productions, simply search the web or make a few phone calls. Within a college dance education course, I highly recommend that this is a requirement within the course.
