Postscript: Further Discussion, Reflection, and Research Related to Neal Beasley’s Artist Profile

Each week following an artist's post, reflection questions and research ideas will get posted. These are aimed towards college level courses (senior seminar, composition, dance education, and more), but of course anyone can read the postscript and find thought-provoking questions and activities.

Discuss: Take Aways

Within a course, select one phrase or sentence that struck you in Neal's artist profile. Share your selections and discuss further.

Reflect: "Dance as a Practice of Pleasure"

Neal talked about having moments when he has had to reconnect with the pleasure of dancing. How do you keep this feeling alive year after year?

Discuss: Audience/Performer

Neal wrote about performing, "The poetics of dancing, watching a body make real-time decisions in a way that will never be perfectly recreated, bridging the mysterious energetic divide between viewer and mover, are what I return to again and again."

Within a composition course, unpack this idea together.

View: Neal Performing

There is a short (1:37 minute) clip of Neal performing Trisha Brown's Watermotor. Click here. In a class, discuss this clip in three ways:

1. Go around the group, and share a word or phrase describing what you SEE (objective) - arms circling, twisting, one man dancing alone.

2. Next, share a key word/descriptor/feeling (subjective) - busy, flowing, arms.

3. Last, describe Neal's performance of this piece.
