Ten years ago, Dance/USA published Dance from the Campus to the Real World (and Back Again), edited by Suzanne Callahan. Over the years, I have shared it with colleagues and occasionally paused to read an essay or two.
Finding it on the bookshelf again today, I was drawn back into Wally Cardona's 4-page essay about being an artist, having a company, and what this all means in the US at this moment. While "this moment" was 10 years ago, this moment is now, still, in the US. On this blog, we keep sharing the stories, questions, challenges, and successes of artists throughout the country. There are so many ways to do this work, to be in dance, and to be a dancer.
Through the magic of technology, the entire book is now online for free. You can click on the PDF to enjoy the book on your own tech device. Wally's essay is on pages 128-131. I encourage college students, dancers building their companies, and dancers of all ages to read this succinct, spot-on, inspiring essay. Thank you, Wally!
