Becoming an Arts Administrator: Healthy Organizations

Wordcloud

I am reading The Cycle: A Practical Approach to Managing Arts Organizations by Michael M. Kaiser this summer. Kaiser's writing is clear, accessible, and thought provoking.

This week I have been thinking about the idea of "the health of an organization." This leads to some great reflection questions. Want to join me?

  • How do you personally define a healthy arts organization (whether you are speaking about a dance company, dance center, foundation, or arts council)?
  • How healthy is your personnel right now – division of tasks, work load, happiness in their positions, relationships between each other?
  • How are your finances right now?
  • Is it a joyful and stimulating place to work?
  • What is the energy in the room each week?
  • Do you have inspiring goals and dreams for the future? Is the staff wholeheartedly committed to these ideas?
  • How would you describe your current board of directors, in terms of attitude, commitment, and activity?

I think these are great questions to consider. And if you are finding that some aspects at your organization are indeed unhealthy, are you wanting to support a change in the near future?
