As dancers, we joke around that we "just pass our money around" (ie "I go to your show, and you attend mine…."). But seriously, as choreographers with a dance company, it is very important to re-evaluate your current audience and potential audience each year.
As you build a company, you begin with two degrees of separation – your family, friends, and college buddies enthusiastically attending your performances.
With each new year, take the time to re-evaluate your community, connections, and potential audience for your upcoming events. Your personal and professional community keeps growing each year, and so should your audience. The diagram above provides some ideas. Download the diagram here:
Look at the past year:
- Are you teaching now? Are those students (and their parents) potential audience members?
- You are in a relationship now. Who is in your partner's community (family, friends, and co-workers)?
- Who are your neighbors?
The following attachment can serve as a "worksheet" as you consider your audience.
Here's to an exciting year ahead of artmaking and sharing your work with more people!
