Hot Mess
I’m committed to a class called Hot Mess, taught by San Francisco Bay Area artist Alex Ketley. The class is an intimate size of 8 dancers. I am taking it for two weeks, and I had to drop all expectations at the door. It’s been a great community so far of people who are dedicated to making a mess of themselves and taking risks. Hot Mess is exactly what it sounds like. An observer stopping in for a moment would be lost and most likely feel strange seeing the type of chaos that implodes from this dance class. It’s a test kitchen for failure and movement is also an outcome!
The aim is to create tasks that transform the way the body is wired to move, to discover the habits we have as movers and overcomplicate the body and mind with too much to accomplish, which then will produce the unknown, a hot mess. A second outcome of the class has been to discover individual habits in the body and embrace them but press even further into developing and challenging those habits. A goal is to have a layered understanding of habits so that dancers can deepen their possibilities of them for the future. By the end of this class my so called habits have gone to the chopping block and either have been reformed or accompanied by my biggest fear…becoming a hot mess.
