Speaking as a Teaching Artist: Fifty Perspectives

Over the past four years, 136 working artists have shared their stories and career paths on this blog. One of the biggest themes to emerge is about teaching and its integral role within our work in current times. It is no longer an "either/or" conversation but rather "yes/and." To be a teaching artist is to share, question, make, invite, challenge, and connect - with our students and within our own artmaking. Below you will see various posts sharing insight from 50 different artists from around the United States. As Gwen Welliver wrote in her artist profile on the blog,

Teaching is lab time. I bring in an idea, others try it, and our work together activates the idea. Work created in the "classroom" is invariably more amazing than anything I could have ever envisioned – and this inspiration fuels me to make work. In this way teaching is fundamental to my creative practice.

I hope that these quotes will inspire you and connect with and validate your work this school year.
