Dreaming/Preparing/Dancing: 3 Days Until the Premiere of EAMES by Kristin Damrow & Company

We asked each dancer to speak to the ideas of risk and rigor in the work. Today we hear from Allegra Bautista, Nell Suttles, and Patrick Barnes.

From Allegra:
Each time I enter the piece, I am striving to go beyond my edge both physically and artistically. There are so many nuances to discover and explore in this work. Every movement requires purpose and attention. It’s been a challenge for me to stay fully committed to the research of my individual personality of Ray. The process has been rigorous, yet, rewarding at the same time. I’m so excited to see it unfold itself this week.

Nell Suttles

From Nell:
I would say that learning about the rigorous work of Ray and Charles Eames has been incredibly inspiring and has shown me how combining hard work and taking risks in a playful way can lead to beautiful ideas and creations. It has been a fun challenge to apply these principles to my dancing and approach to this piece.

From Patrick:
Risk is part of the plan.

The cost of moving forward.
Of trying in earnest.

Failure is always on the table.

Rigor is failing often enough to learn to do it right.
You live inside of it long enough to know everything that can go wrong. You explore the edges.
You build capability at the periphery of possibility.
You show up every day and work.
So that when the time comes, excellence is not something you strive for.
Excellence is a habit you’ve built.
