The State by State Project: Delaware

The State by State Project, through Life as a Modern Dancer:

Throughout 2018, we will highlight one state per week….its arts council, dance education organization, festivals, artist residencies, dance companies, and more. We will link to previous posts of artists based in the state, masters programs, and city guides.

This ambitious feature hopes to highlight the abundance of arts in the United States as well as to challenge us to look at areas of the country seeking more arts and arts education.

The Grand – a theater in Wilmington that presents local and touring dance companies

Delaware based artist AT Moffett also shared about the following 7 projects, including her own recent performance.

  • Pieces of a Dream, Inc. is a modern dance company and school directed by Ashley S.K. Davis. They are incredible artists who do powerful, socially relevant choreography. Their next show, Bound. Free, is March 8th.
  • Ignite, a company of dancing artists, is a modern dance company directed by Kimberly Schroeder at the University of Delaware, 20 minutes south of Wilmington in Newark. This group is very innovative. They have done some exciting interdisciplinary collaborations on and off campus.
  • Christina Cultural Arts Center has a wonderful dance program for children through adults. As a presenting organization, they also bring artists across disciplines to Wilmington. They are presenting choreographer Vincent Thomas’s work What’s Going On on April 21st.
  • In Feb 2018, the Delaware Art Museum launched a Performance Series, which has a strong dance presence.
  • Cab Calloway School for the Arts is a public arts magnet middle and high school with a thriving dance program led by Allyson Cohen-Sherlock and Tara Madsen Robbins.
  • Dr. Lynnette Overby is a leader in dance education and advocacy in our state. She is a dance scholar whose work centers on arts-based research, arts-integration, and public scholarship in dance, and she has written extensively on these topics. She is the Deputy Director of Community Engagement at the University of Delaware and a professor in the Dance Minor Program at UD. She is a mentor to many dancers and scholars.  Her current project, Women of Consequence, opens March 10.
A.T. also added:

I love living and working as a dancer and choreographer in Wilmington. The people here care about their city and making it better. And there is a commitment to making the arts a central voice in that movement. Wilmington is big enough that there are exciting artistic offerings, but it is small enough that it is easy to build community. I was lucky to receive a choreographic fellowship from the Delaware Division of the Arts in 2017, and with it, directed and choreographed an arts-based research project and multidisciplinary performance called Re-Entry: A Performance Tribute to Veterans. It was a collaboration between artists, veterans, and veteran-artists. We are currently working on next steps for 2018, including sharing the work with a warrior audience and partnering with a qualitative researcher to measure the impact. The project has affirmed the power of the arts to help us tell our stories, to take a hard look at a pressing issue, and to forge meaningful connections with those who have served.
