Movement Poem #29 (Simply, Warming Up)

Simply Warming Up poem

Simply, Warming Up

A movement poem for April 12, 2020 (originally written February 4, 2019)

By Jill Randall

Shake it out!

Roll down,

Roll back up.

Melt to the ground.

Sway back up.

Hold a balance!

Release it…

Hold a balance.

Release.

Hello!

Today I am sharing a poem I wrote over a year ago for a class. Yes, it is literally meant to be a "warm up with words." Please join in!

As for music for today, may I suggest "4 151" by Michael Wall? It is #2 on this playlist. (This whole album is one of my favorites of his.)

I would first play with the verbs of the poem in an improvisation. Try each one for about 20-30 seconds:

  • Shaking
  • Rolling (ie moving the spine)
  • Melting
  • Swaying
  • Holding
  • Releasing

Next up = create a short warm up based on the poem and its 9 lines. Consider doing it 4 times in a row, switching your facing for each new round (inspired by the warm ups of Randee Paufve).

Thank you!
