Shelter-in-Place Dance Dictionary
By Raja Feather Kelly
I will preface by saying, as an artist I am not changed. Though my circumstances have, my integrity tells me I am ready, prepared, and willing to move myself through this time. These definitions are representative of my understanding.
Level Changes – a description for shifts in energetic capacity. Like a gas tank; fluctuation in what you have the energy for at any given time.
Proximity – the perceived distance from the memory or reminder of the life you lead before and the variable associated with how you're moving forward.
Improvisation – describes the time in which we are in. The Great Improvisation. For now that everything is known, we are forced to respond spontaneously to the molecular accumulation of information.
Rigor – the dedication to the practice of being honest comfortable with responding and not reacting to any given situation at any given time.
Unison – the replacement word for "together." We are not together, we are apart, but we are in unison; under similar circumstances.
Time – an organizing principal to measure the duration of completing one task to another.
Dancemaking – the algebra of time, space, movement, organization, improvisation, practice, measure, choice, within any given circumstance.
Documentation – a dramaturgical process of wanting to remember things, feelings, and experienced as they are in the moment that they happen.
Reflection – the manual process of a boomerang, sending something out in the world and then going out to get it to bring it back, taking in all that is seen in the process.
