Coming Together through Identity and Artistry: The LatinXtensions Mentoring and Networking Program
By Jill Randall
Two of my passion areas in the modern dance field are mentoring and networking. Thus, I was thrilled to talk with David Herrera a few months ago to hear more about the LatinXtensions Program. Do you know about it? Are you a San Francisco Bay Area-based artist? Read on. Applications are due November 22, 2020 to be considered for the 2021-2022 program.
With over 20 years working as a professional artist and producer, Herrera continues his own work while at the same time buoying the next generation of LatinX artists. “This is my quest, to make it easier for young Latinx and Hispanic artists to not just survive, but rather to succeed in the professional dance field," emphasizes Herrera. "I see it as part of my duties as a longer term artist to 'pay it forward' and make sure emerging dance artists feel supported, seen, and valued. This program offers that while also building a Latinx – Hispanic community within the dance sector.”
LatinXtensions brings together 4-7 artists over 1 year for monthly group meetings and discussion. It is skill building, networking, and shepherding dreams into reality. Herrera facilitates the monthly gathering as well as meets one-on-one with each participant each month. What a gift – collegiality and very personalized dialogue. Additionally, other BIPOC working artists serve as guest mentors providing different perspectives on “making it” and offering guidance to the participants. Guests have included Geral Casel, Lenora Lee, Vanessa Sanchez, and Farah Shaikh.
SF Bay area-based artists, self-identifying as LatinX and Hispanic, can apply before the November 22nd deadline. Choreographers should have 5 years or less of producing experience; performers should have 3 years or less.
