I love time-based projects big and small, whether performance based work or ideas for the classroom. Today I am resharing 7 projects that might be of interest to you in the springtime. You might read the posts and use the words and guiding questions; or, you might like to read about each project and then riff off of them to make your own lists of words and queries.
Daily explorations:
365 Dance. A few years ago, from August 2014 through August 2015, I spent a year and wrote down a dance concept every day in a sketchbook. It was a great daily practice, and I have loved revisiting these words in recent years as daily inspiration and reflection. Check out these twelve word lists, or try out the daily practice on your own or as part of a class assignment with high school, undergrad, or graduate level students.
Dancer Wellness Cards. Full disclosure – this is the one thing in the post that requires a purchase. In 2020 during the pandemic, I completed a fun quarantine project with fellow dancer and calligrapher Claire Calalo Berry. We made a sweet deck of 31 cards for daily inspiration. The words include ideas such as: whole, listen, improvise, and lineage. Pick a card to start off your day, class, or rehearsal. $28 through Etsy.
Weekly explorations:
The Artists' Gratitude Project. Back in 2018, I created a weekly offering to support a regular gratitude practice for artists. The ideas are still beautiful and relevant. There are 52 ideas, and you can dive in anywhere in the project.
Technique Journals. Do you work with undergraduate or graduate level students? These 3 free and downloadable journals offer weekly reflection questions and writing prompts to deepen the technique class experience. Consider using one of them for the second half of the spring semester.
Daily or weekly explorations:
Teacher Reflection Questions. A few years ago Leah Cox, Debra Knapp, Elizebeth Randall Rains, and I made this list of 23 questions. I want to acknowledge that they were written many years before the COVID-19 pandemic, but the heart of the questions still resonate at this time. Check them out!
Movement Poems. One year ago, I wrote 52 poems to use as springboards for short improvisations or composing in your home. There's plenty of content for daily or weekly explorations. Each poem is also paired with music by Michael Wall.
Arts Administrator's Alphabet. If you are an arts administrator, consider reading one section a day or week for new ideas this springtime. Eleven arts administrators novelly worked from A to Z to unearth 180 terms and concepts we use and consider in our administrative roles. There are links, quotes, and guiding questions.
