How many MFA programs in dance are in the United States? (Summer 2025 update)

From Blog Director Jill Randall:

In Spring 2016, an online conversation led to me creating this list for the first time. At that moment, there were 48 MFA programs in United States. Today, the list has shifted a little, but amazingly there are still 47.

I want to name and honor the programs that I removed from the original 2016 list: Mills College, UC Davis, UC San Diego, George Washington University, and the University of Oregon. With the University of the Arts program, I believe that Bennington College has fully embraced it now within its own MFA.

Low residency options still exist within 9 programs: Saint Mary's College of California, Bennington College, Montclair State, Hollins University, Jacksonville University, Wilson College, Point Park University, Texas A & M University, and University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.

Below, I go state by state with program names. Hyperlinks go to each program's site. If any program has been omitted, please leave a comment below, and I will update the list. Or, sadly, if a program has stopped running, leave a comment below.

Degree titles and areas of focus vary: Dance, Creative Practice, Choreography, Choreographic Inquiry, Experimental Choreography, Performance…to name a few. Some degrees are full-time and others are part-time or low residency. Some MFA programs are intended for mid-career or established dancers. Many are 2 years in length, while quite a few listed 2.5-3 years as the duration of study.

This list is just a starting off point. I wish you the best with your research and inquiries. I myself completed my MFA in Dance: Creative Practice from Saint Mary's College from 2014-2016. I loved the low residency format. I had worked in the field for 17 years and appreciated graduate school as a time of deep reflection about those 17 years as well as new skill building.

I also am in the process of updating my running list on the blog of MA and PhD programs. Stay tuned.
