Postscript: Further Discussion, Reflection, and Research Related to Tamara Riewe’s Artist Profile

Each week following an artist's post, reflection questions and research ideas will get posted. These are aimed towards college level courses (senior seminar, composition, dance education, and more), but of course anyone can read the postscript and find thought-provoking questions and activities.

Research: Trisha Brown

After reading Tamara's profile (ie a Trisha Brown company member), take some time to research or revisit the work of Trisha Brown. Look at the company's website, work posted on Youtube, and sections in your textbooks on Brown's work. She is an icon in modern dance. Look at the company's touring schedule to see if experiencing a live performance is possible this year. If you had to describe Trisha Brown's work in 2-4 sentences, how would you explain it to someone else unfamiliar with it?

Discuss: Tamara's Artist Profile

Tamara holds a special job here in the United States – one of the rare full-time company jobs. What were the steps that got her there? How old was she when she got into Trisha Brown? Discuss as a group.

Reflect: Bravery and Courage

In her advice for young dancers, Tamara wrote about "bravery." Consider the ideas of bravery and courage in relation to your dancing (your classes, pieces you have made, job choices, etc). When have you felt brave? Describe an experience in college or post-college. Consider courageous and brave steps forward you might take in the next year.

  1. You have an awesome story, with lots of adventure. It sounds like all of your hard work and risk taking really payed off in the long run. It is very admirable that you made a path for yourself by constantly moving in order to get where you wanted and join the company of your dreams. A large portion of our society sits back and thinks that opportunities will fall into place for them, when in reality, you have to create your own pathway by making choices and taking initiative, which is precisely how you got where you are today.
I envy your life on the road, as it is something I can only dream about accomplishing someday. Do you sometimes feel like traveling can become monotonous, and you would just like to settle and be stationary? I am currently in my 20’s and still trying to figure out what i want in life and where I see myself, even in the next couple years. It is comforting to hear that as your explored different places and learned more about yourself, that you have solidified your goals in life and have a better idea of how to balance all aspects of your life, because that is something I am struggling to come to terms with. I also appreciate your words of advice, to “commit” because committing is the only way to move forward…with anything.
